Overview
This 4-day immersive adventure in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park offers the ultimate primate trifecta: mountain gorilla trekking, golden monkey encounters, and a hike to Dian Fossey’s historic Karisoke Research Center. It’s a journey through misty bamboo forests, conservation history, and the rich cultural traditions of Rwanda.

 

 

 

Itinerary at a Glance

Day 1: Kigali Arrival – Drive to Volcanoes National Park

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking – Life-Changing Encounter

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali – Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

 

 

  • Meet and greet at Kigali International Airport or city hotel
  • Optional visit to Kigali Genocide Memorial or Nyamirambo Women’s Center
  • Drive northwest through rolling hills and villages to Volcanoes National Park (approx. 2.5–3 hours)
  • Arrive at your forest lodge for check-in and welcome dinner

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking – The Great Apes of the Mist

  • Early breakfast and transfer to park headquarters for trek briefing
  • Guided hike into the bamboo-covered slopes of the Virunga Mountains
  • Spend one awe-inspiring hour with a gorilla family in their natural habitat
  • Return to lodge for lunch and rest
  • Afternoon at leisure or enjoy a massage at the lodge spa

Day 3: Golden Monkeys & Dian Fossey Hike

  • Morning golden monkey trek through dense vegetation
  • Observe these rare, energetic primates in the lower forest zones
  • Return to the lodge for lunch
  • Afternoon hike to Karisoke Research Center – visit the site where Dian Fossey worked and is buried
  • Learn about her legacy and ongoing conservation work

Day 4: Return to Kigali

  • Breakfast with panoramic volcano views
  • Optional morning walk or visit to local artisan cooperative
  • Scenic return to Kigali with lunch en route
  • Drop-off at your hotel or airport for onward travel
